Produced by Sutliff, Mixture No. 79 was first released in 1933 and has become one of the blending house's flagship mixtures. An extraordinary blend of toasted Burley cased with hints of anise, whisky, and natural vanilla, this old-school Aromatic has maintained its position among the most popular pipe tobacco in the United States for decades. In fact, Sutliff's Richmond tobacco factory was originally designed and constructed more than 65 years ago for the dedicated purpose of manufacturing this singular blend.

Unlike other Aromatics, the Burley for Mixture No. 79 isn't dipped or sprayed with casing; it's fully submerged in flavoring and dried over an extended period on a proprietary 60-foot bed dryer in order to caramelize the leaf and enhance its delicious top notes. Sutliff is the only modern manufacturer to use this specialized, time-consuming method of applying flavoring, resulting in a unique, incredibly rich, complex, single-component blend, reminiscent of bygone eras: A testament to the blending house's commitment to the same quality and consistency today as decades ago.

An old blend thats been around for some time, got an old school taste that you dont find in much stuff in modern day, took me a few bowls to figure out how i like to smoke this stuff, but i love it, its been around for a long time without much changed, dont fix what aint broke for us men who are stuck in our ways , i love this cool smoking comforting old timey mixture, dont listen to the hipsters bad mouthing this stuff, try it for yourself before you decide it aint for you...Read More

Tobacco would not light. I laid it out for 12 hours still difficult to light. Bowl got so hot I couldn’t hold but still no smoke. Finally got it going after 10 matches. No taste no aroma. I bought six pouches of this stuff just over two years ago and never tried it, never did anything with it, so it's just been sitting in my cellar. By chance I decide to give it a whirl today, and it's great. I've been missing out. It's really good. I'm not a huge aromatic fan but I do love burley mixtures, and this one doesn't sacrifice the quality burley to deliver a nice aroma. The topping is lovely in the tin/bag note, not an overwhelmingly strong or medicine-y punch in the nose as many aromatics give you, and its flavor in the bowl is rather subtle. It doesn't drown out the natural flavors and aromas of the burley, which, IMO, is one of the most versatile and underrated leafs on the scene. Sutliff uses some quality stock in this mixture too, so there's much to be explored and enjoyed here over two or three bowls sipped in a row. I applaud Sutliff's choice to stick with straight burley instead of adding cavendish or virginian leaf. It redounds to the very classically American, i.e., "codger" character of the mixture, which immediately transports me to an idyllic, sunny, summer day on the farm. I can hear the grasshoppers in the field and smell the tall grass. I can see puffs of dandelion pollen wafting by on the lazy breeze. It's the perfect thing to break in a new cob. And since I like it so much, I think I'll buy some more just to see if perhaps I've let it sot too long in the plastic pouch. Maybe it's even better if I jar it fresh and age it that way. This is maybe my favorite, number 1. Like others advise, it’s best when sipped slowly in order to bring out all the tastes. I like the licorice taste, it’s not cheap or overpowering, it’s simply a good taste.

The bag smells nicely of Root Beer. The smoke and room note however are just standard old school burley and rather plain. If you like Prince Albert or Carter Hall, you'll probably enjoy Mixture 79.
