, it turns into a nice pile of flaked tobacco that is easy to load and easy to smoke. If you just gotta have that genuine plug prep and experience that requires getting a knife to cut off a slice and then rubbing it out, my recommendation is to try Jackknife Plug. The tin note is mild. I can smell both the DFK and the Virginia. In my opinion, this is a very straightforward smoke. Not overly complex but VERY enjoyable. The DFK lends the smokiness and the usual cocoa like note while the Virginias add a nice sweetness and the Burley follows-up nicely with a bit of a punch. It is strong but at the same time it is a mild smoke. The room note is very nice. The Mrs liked it so that's a plus. For me, it easily is an all day smoke. The nic hit is there but if smoked slowly and with a bit of food in the belly, it is easily manageable. Overall, this is one amazing blend that I most definitely will keep buying and keep in my rotation. If you like DFK, this one won't disappoint. Read Less

ckly. I shared the rest of the tin with a good friend who was pretty much down to his last bowl of tobacco (I know, that's a scary thought) and he seemed to think it was decent also. Looks like a plug but it crumbles like a cake, looks like they pressed it with a hydraulic press, I've never had any packed this tightly. It was kind of on the dry side, almost ready to smoke straight out of the tin, which I'll give it a good mark for not being too moist. I just wasn't really too impressed with the overall smoking experience. The flavor is outstanding and complex, sweet and surprisingly mild with chocolatey cocoa, vanilla and just a hint of something herbal and floral to it. Nicotine strength is a hair above medium, you can definitely feel it but not a cowboy killer. This has quickly become one of my go to favorites. Read Less

is medium to strong and nic is medium to strong. Flavoring is medium, with notes of Anise (spicy, aromatic, sweet licorice) and a Valerian Root like essence (herbal, woody, earthy, very bitter). Flavoring is quite potent in the beginning but dies down quite a bit but never drops to the background. Taste is medium to full and mostly consistent, with notes of anise, bitter, very woody, herbal floral, dryness, salty vegetation, spices, cigar, orange peel. mild cocoa, fermented tart/sourness, a spicy semi-sweet nutty background note, and a very peppery retro. Dark Air Cured is leading with Kentucky, Virginia and Flavoring supporting. Room note is tolerable to strong, and aftertaste is great. Read Less

ht. The tobacco itself is very powerful in terms of the flavors, aromas, and nicotine, and the toppings enhance and compliment it beautifully. It’s an exceptionally good blend. Just keep the nicotine levels in mind, it’s no joke and should only be consumed if you have a decent tolerance or a small bowl. If you’re up for a delicious and unique powerbomb, give it a try. It’ll ghost your pipes for a few bowls afterwards though, especially if your meerschaum is clean when you smoke it. I don’t mind, I love the stuff, but just keep it in mind. Read Less

t a fan of strong tobaccos), but with slow smoking and of course not on an empty stomach - very pleasant. Of course, it will not become an everyday tobacco, but from time to time I will return to it with pleasure.
It lights with little fuss and burns quite well. The scenting is fairly pronounced at first - even now its still hard to put my finger on the flavor. I'm reminded of Lakeland florality.
However, as the bowl progresses, the scenting recedes some and the tobacco comes forward until at mid-bowl the two meld and it reminds me of gingerbread. It is so smooth and pleasant that I am puffing along at a slow pace. Read Less

It's rough on first lighting, for me, but settles down once it's fully lit and has been tamped a bit. The nicotine hit is strong, so I'd suggest it for after a meal or you get a bit woozy. Read Less

o. I have several of his pipes and I will smoke it in them.
It's a rich full smoke. No bite. You get that taste on the retro. It's almost vanilla cherry like, with a tin note close to playdough, although no play dough in the smoking. I don't know what it smells like to others, but I imagine it similar to what most people may think about when they think of pipe smoke. My wife says that the tin note reminds her of stuff her grandfather smoked, but I smoke outside and I have no feedback on what it smells like to others when it's actually being smoked.
This is STRONG stuff. If I smoke more than a half bowl I get dizzy. That is the only downside. So, the several tins that I initially bought in a frenzy will probably last me the rest of my life. Read Less

news is that while it does still smoke sweet, it's not as sweet as I was afraid it would be. The plug was very neat, and strangely, was pressed what I would consider sideways. Thusly, unless you can sturdily cut a 1/2" wide 1/16" thick 3" tall slice with the plug standing up, you'll end up cutting it like I did with it laying down, resulting in very short ribbons. Next time I'll start cutting diagonally. Additionally, I would consider this a 3/5 for strength, but maybe it is just taking more to floor me these days. I do recommend this right after the smokiest, latakia-est English you can find as a nice dessert smoke. Note: The pictured tin is no longer accurate as the tin art has been ruined by the government's nic warning. Read Less

of smokes, but I am finding it's a good tobacco for when you want something deal more potent than a full Cavendish aromatic without having to go to a strong English or Semois or Five Brothers type of tobacco. I am a fan of Royal Yacht, but sometimes I feel Royal Yacht can wear out it's welcome over the course of a pipe. This War Horse red bar is very repeatable, and has now assumed a permanent place in the rotation. The bar is easy to prepare just by hand, packs well and smokes well without any particular issues, and needs at minimum number of
relights, if at all. A moderate cadence prevents any bite or gurgle, and there is very little dottle and no moisture at the end of the smoke. I see it rated as a strong tobacco but I would say it's a little bit closer to a strong medium than a full out heavy smoke. The only thing that keeps it from being absolutely five stars it's not a particularly complex smoke. Not every pipe needs to be a complex smoke, however! I'm very happy that I've come across this because I have been having trouble finding something that fits this particular spot in the rotation. Despite the tin note, and while it does retain a pleasing sweetness throughout the smoke, the clove and the vanilla don't really come into play while smoking. The room note is not nearly as crowd-pleasing as say some of the Lane Limited aromatics, but it is certainly inoffensive, especially for a smoke that leans closer to the strong side of the spectrum. Did I mention I'm pretty pleased to add this to the rotation? I'm hoping it's popular enough to remain available in the long term. Read Less

I'm not really a fan of aromatics, so maybe that's it, but I only found the taste and overall smoking experience to be OK and nothing exceptional.
