Danish Estates: Svend Hangaard Smooth Brandy with Boxwood

Product Number: 004-001-6554

Sven Handgaard took the usual route towards becoming a pipemaker by serving as a prison warden for several decades. He wanted to give those under his supervision something productive to do, as one does, and something that provided them both a useful end product and minimal opportunity to harm either themselves or each other, as you do. As he'd been smoking a pipe himself since the age of fourteen, and had long engaged in woodworking and cabinet-making as a hobby, the natural solution was to provide them with pre-drilled stummels (via Henrik Jorgensen, Poul Ilsted, and Tao, then all at the Svendborg pipe factory) and set his wards to shaping briar.

One thing led to another, as it does, and Svend discovered considerable enjoyment and satisfaction in making pipes himself. Upon retiring, there was nothing to do for it but take lessons from Joao Reis, as well as additional advice from Kai Nielsen and Karsten Tarp. Though a bit of a late bloomer, there is something to be said about approaching pipemaking with the maturity and patience gained through sixty-odd years of life. Certainly so, judging by this Danish straight Brandy, which displays thoughtful precision, clean lines, great stem-work, and a good eye for choice materials.
