Danish Estates: Former Sandblasted Bent Brandy (2014) (Replacement Stem by Adam Davidson) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-001-17556
Bent pipes in the Danish tradition are often described as serpentine, describing the heavy, stylized curve and recurve of the shank and stem, which itself creates the illusion of a snake in motion. That descriptor holds true for this bent Brandy from Hans "Former" Nielsen, but only if the snake to which it's alluding is an anaconda. Simply put, in this piece, Former has not only managed to maintain that canonical ebb and flow in profile — the lifting heel curling around the parabolic arch of the bottom of the bowl, through the elongated transition, and up into to the arcing shank — but he's lent a strong sense of muscularity to the form through heavy cheeking of the bowl and keeping the shank quite stout. Combined, the graceful lines and inherent muscularity of the design result in an incredibly powerful aesthetic — alluding not just to an anaconda in motion, but a great beast of a snake poised to strike.
While this piece does have a replacement stem, it isn't the normal, stock variety. Rather, because of the original stem's damaged state, artisan carver Adam Davidson handmade a replacement that's identical to the one Former himself made. Though technically not original, it wants for nothing in regard to quality, comfort, and Former's intended style.- Andrew Wike
