Danish Estates: Kurt Balleby Smooth Freehand (0) (Unsmoked)
Product Number: 004-001-12831
Though not one of Kurt Balleby's wilder pieces, this piece still belies its true form in profile, presenting itself as a fairly structured take on the bent Egg, when the actuality is a touch more complex. Rather than a fully-rounded, Egg-like bowl, Kurt has imbued it with squared-off, paneled ridges to the aft and fore, lending the composition the tactile impression of a very bulbous Japanese Blowfish. And like the Blowfish, it uses the form's dynamic shaping to visually divide regions of grain from one another, while also showing a very subtle sense of asymmetry. Finished in a red walnut stain, there's no shortage of visual interest, and it's still unsmoked.- Daniel Bumgardner
