Danish Estates: Poul Ilsted Smooth Bent Bulldog (1B) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-001-14032
If this bent Bulldog looks familiar, that might not be by accident. Manduela apprenticed under Ilsted, and his influence can be seen on her bent Bulldog shapes in particular, which bear striking resemblance to this one. With a shank more rectangular than diamond, it presents a low-profile, sleek image, lifting gracefully from the crisp heel of the bowl, all while maintaining the precise linework that Ilsted has become so known for. Indeed, it is such an iconic profile, that it is frequently referred to in describing the work of others, as his influence has spread beyond the apprentices he worked with, and into the wider pipemaking world as a whole. Condition is good on this piece, with just a single, small ding on the bowl, as well as some rim darkening to note. Brilliant piece.
