Danish Estates: S. Bang Smooth Bent Apple (1451) (2014) (Unsmoked)
Product Number: 004-001-14906
An unsmoked S. Bang estate pipe is certainly a rarity, and an opportunity to save considerably over the cost of a brand new version. S. Bang is eminently skilled at generating plump, curvaceous forms with generally short lengths, like this contrast stained piece. The shank is meaty, and the transition, where many pipemakers have difficulty, reveals the workmanship that Per Hansen and Ulf Noltensmeier have become famous for, carefully shaped to promote the cheeking of the bowl and maintaining the beautiful curvature of the Apple shape. This pipe is the 51st made by the workshop in 2014, stamped 1451, with no individual maker's mark, just the usual S. Bang nomenclature. Round bowls like this are difficult for pipemakers to maintain well-oriented grain, but this piece is exceptionally grained for sure, and illuminated with the famous S. Bang contrast stain. It's especially intriguing under a magnifier, where the fine angel-hair strands of grain leap from their backgrounds in lovely filaments.- Chuck Stanion
