Danish Estates: Tao Sandblasted Bent Billiard with Silver (A)
Product Number: 004-001-15380
Jens "Tao" Nielsen typically prefers more compact, muscular renditions of Danish classics, often finished in smooth, warm contrast stains. That said, based on the carver's previous work, this deeply bent Billiard fits in well with the other bent pieces I've encountered from Tao. Pinched and slightly stretched of transition, there's no shortage of cheeking, lending the bowl a neoclassic sense of visual weight and firmly planting it in hand. While larger than many of his other pipes, this number maintains the consistent robustness inherent in Nielsen's work, and if the shaping didn't give it away, the combination of sterling silver, cumberland, and accents of creamy white and semi-translucent caramel hues at the shank end and stem base ought to be clear hints. All dressed in a subtle, Danish-style sandblast, displaying an alluring array of ring grain with just a slight kiss of texture.-Truett Smith
