Danish Estates: Lasse Skovgaard Smooth Bent Dublin (Lion) (Unsmoked)
Product Number: 004-001-15385
Lasse Skovgaard has had quite the remarkable pipemaking career ever since he started at W.Ø. Larsen when he was just 18 years old, learning from highly renowned makers such as his father, Benni Jørgensen, as well as Teddy Knudsen. It wasn't until a couple years later, though, at the 2004 Chicagoland Pipe Show that he truly made a name for himself, selling all 12 of the pipes he brought with him, beginning the loyal following he has maintained to this day.
This Lasse piece solidifies what makes him such a respected carver as here we see a clean, gracefully flowing bent Dublin, proudly displaying its Danish roots. The poised bowl displays a good deal of forward momentum in profile and smoothly transitions to a gently arcing shank, the shank's ridgelines giving the bowl its well-defined cheeks in the process.
Initially the asymmetric rim appears to be an unusual feature, but it actually serves to showcase a beautiful sea of birdseye and highlights Lasse's skillful shaping and line work. In his W.Ø. Larsen days, Skovgaard crafted some of their beautiful straight-grained pieces, and all that training clearly paid off here on this offering. Considering its unique shaping and exquisite grain, this piece certainly deserves its Lion stamp, the carver's highest grade. This gorgeous piece is unsmoked and in excellent condition.- Jeffery Sitts
