Danish Estates: Former Smooth Bent Bulldog
Product Number: 004-001-15557
Though the classic English/French Bulldog is a shape of firm nature, the pipe makers and designers of the Danish school have never had much trouble making lovely ones adapted to a smoother, more fluid style. Here Hans "Former" Nielsen tackles the old classic with aplomb, creating something that is very clearly Bulldog, in its tapered bowl and rim and iconic beadline, but one that's clearly easy and smooth of gesture and line, even despite the addition of greater, perfectly upright height up front and a crisp saddle stem out back. The contrast stain is at once alluring and traditional, showcasing the fine block of briar Nielsen selected for this piece, while the unique, angled nature of the beadline is a signature of the Danish carver's, having been fashioned from a tool he made himself. Condition-wise, just some unevenness from reaming and mild carbonizing in the chamber as well as rim rim darkening to consider.-Truett Smith
