Danish Estates: Tao Smooth Rhodesian with Silver (Replacement Tenon)
Product Number: 004-001-16171
Tao's pipes rarely find themselves in the estate market, testifying to just how much collectors adore his pieces and making this Rhodesian all the more rare a sight. It drifts slightly from the Danish carver's typically stout and robust style, opting for a leaner, more elegant profile. The bowl is a handsome mix of Rhodesian and Dublin, flaring consistently into an inflated rim below which lies the design's characteristic beadline. It's dressed in one of Tao's oft-seen pairings of warm contrast stain and silver band, and while cumberland is a conventional material used for the artisan's stems, this one displays a unique styling — the base shaped in a unique, accordion-like fashion. The tenon is a replacement, making the stem and shank not perfectly flush, and there's some minor rim darkening, handling marks, and finish buffed off the rim, but condition is still good here.-Truett Smith
