Danish Estates: Tao Smooth Bent Pot with Silver (9mm)
Product Number: 004-001-16172
It's a rare sight to see a pipe crafted by Jens "Tao" Nielsen on the estate market since collectors covet his work and can rarely bring themselves to part with one of his creations. It makes pieces like this bent Pot quite an exciting find, and this one is quite a unique piece within the legendary carver's portfolio. Tao is known for his stout, sturdy designs, but here we see him utilizing some playful, asymmetrical shaping cues. When viewed from above, the stem base and shank lead into the low-slung bowl at a slightly tilted angle. The gently rounded rim comes to a small point along the bowl's fore, continuing the piece's incorporation of subtle details in such a unique and effective way. A broad band of sterling silver wraps around the shank end, with briar lining the stem base, creating a visual illusion of sorts when you remove the stem from the stummel. An impressive piece all around from the Danish great.- Jeffery Sitts
