Danish Estates: S. Bang Smooth Rhodesian (A)
Product Number: 004-001-16177
This may be the coolest Rhodesian I've seen.
Let's start from the top, or the rim, that is. The inner rim is very subtly chamfered, while the rest is a broad, curved dome down to the beadlines. From above, one is greeted by birdseye all across the dome down to the first beadline, which is just above the waist of the pipe. The second beadline is at the waist, the widest part of the bowl, so the elevated perspective provides a circle of birdseye surrounded by the dark lines of the beadlines, framing the image, so to speak. Below the beadlines, vertical flame grain descends into the body of the bowl and shank, where its natural direction follows the lines of the shank.
And that shank is stupefying, and my favorite element in this composition. It's rounded at the top and down the sides to the lowest parts of the side shank, where the curve ends with two sharp ridgelines that flow seamlessly from the bowl, along the lower shank, and then lift to the half-saddle stylized mouthpiece where they meet in the overcurve of the saddle configuration into a single line. The curves are complementary, the sharp ridgelines simultaneously present curves of their own, and the combination of these elements provide a thematic, unified composition that's frankly a tour de force of craftsmanship. I think Per and Ulf of S. Bang were showing off when this piece was carved.- Chuck Stanion
