Danish Estates: Jess Chonowitsch Partially Sandblasted Bent Dublin
Product Number: 004-001-16593
One of Sixten Ivarsson's students through the later '60s, Jess Chonowitsch went on to become one of the greatest modern pipemakers — regarded as a living legend. His style caters toward classic Danish shapes, and the artisan's engineering and standards of quality ensure that every pipe produced is as close to perfection as humanly possible. Jess pipes represent some of the finest pipes available, highly desired by collectors and prized both for their sublime shaping and exacting smoking properties. Here, the Danish carver presents a take on the bent Dublin, venturing into Horn territory in its sweeping curve and soft transition. The extra length afforded the shank adds further dynamism to the profile, with the pert, forward-urging bowl continues said momentum and dominated the visual weight. In conventional Danish style, the rim is domed and smooth-polished to contrast the concise sandblast below — the contrast further emphasized by the auburn stain of the rim and darker, ruby-tinged finish of the rest of the stummel. For anyone drawn to handmade Danish pipes, Chonowitsch's work is among the best, every piece he makes greatly enhancing any collection within which its found.-Truett Smith
