Danish Estates: Jorgen Larsen Smooth Dublin (I)
Product Number: 004-001-17405
Jørgen Larsen notably carved pipes for Peter Stokkebye's company and served as a technical director for both Stanwell and Kriswill. Due to an unfortunate allergy to briar dust Larsen eventually retired from pipemaking, which is a shame as the beautiful pieces he created for Stokkebye and under his own name are highly sought-after by collectors. This particular piece pairs a gestural, strongly canted Dublin bowl to a crisp, firm-lined diamond shank and an ever-so-slightly bent saddle stem. Such juxtaposing design cues aren't relatively associated with the Danish pipemaking approach, but Larsen has pulled it off seamlessly with this example. Just as impressive as the shaping is all the fine tendrils of angel hair straight grain that cascades down from the gently inflated rim that's dominated by a sea of swirling birdseye. Magnificent work all around.- Jeffery Sitts
