Danish Estates: Jess Chonowitsch Smooth Billiard Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 004-001-17153

Considered one of the most talented artisan carvers still alive, Jess Chonowitsch fashions breathtaking pipes, often hewing closely to traditional shapes. In this piece the Danish master offers a saddle-stemmed Billiard and keeps the proportions classic yet with a touch of muscularity through the shank and lower bowl. Per Chonowitsch's style, and that of Danish pipemaking at large, the curves are notably softer and more supple compared to English and Italian renditions, with the transition prompting rounded cheeks at the flanks. This is a complete pipe — the shaping and engineering are immaculate, and the presentation follows suit with the vibrant contrast stain revealing streaked flame grain across the stummel. A superlative piece, it's in good condition still, though it should be noted that the slot was openend slightly and some tooth marks had to be filed down.
