Danish Estates: Jorgen Larsen Smooth Rhodesian (H)
Product Number: 004-001-17020
Jørgen Larsen was the sole carver of Peter Stokkebye's pipes, as well as a technical director for both Stanwell and Kriswill. Larsen developed an unfortunate allergy to briar dust and had to eventually retire from pipemaking, leaving behind an impressive legacy of quality craftsmanship. It's obvious that this pipe was made by highly skilled, very methodical hands, and getting your hands on a Jørgen Larsen like this Rhodesian is a real prize. Even more important than its rarity, is that it's just a beautifully desirable shape — compact, yet full of impressive line work and exuding plenty of elegant charm. It features a sharp, low-set ridgeline around the bowl, as well as a neat transition, giving the bowl a feel that brings to mind some of those petite kiseru pieces - though, of course, with a good bit more heft. The bowl tapers effortlessly to the ridgeline and is almost saucer-like in its breadth, while a rich auburn stain covers the stummel beautifully.- Jeffery Sitts
