Danish Estates: Jess Chonowitsch Sandblasted Billiard Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 004-001-18737

If you know anything at all about the history of Danish pipe making, the name Jess Chonowitsch is likely not an unfamiliar one. A living legend of pipe design, his meticulous eye for proportions and clean, minimalist lines has inspired generations of pipe makers — spanning across multiple schools and styles alike. He even designed a large percentage of Stanwell's shape chart. Simply put, Jess is a master of the Danish classic school, and he imbues his well of knowledge into each and every piece. Notice, for example, the extra visual weight lent to the base of this straight Billiard's bowl. It's a proportionately more robust rendition than what we've typically seen from Jess, but is perfectly balanced and finished in a concise sandblast with patterns of ring grain cascading down the bowl. Typically, Chonowitsch will leave the rim smooth and softly rounded, but here, the rim is flat and sandblasted. It suits this rendition handsomely, with a pale accent band standing out in stark contrast against the rest of the piece's dark color palette. Beauty doesn't always correspond to the most complex, conspicuous form. More often than not, it's a study in symmetry, proportions, and the perfection of line. And for that, you have only to look for a Jess Chonowitsch.
