Danish Estates: Jess Chonowitsch Sandblasted Bulldog
Product Number: 004-001-18381
Jess Chonowitsch is a living legend in the world of pipemaking, known for his meticulous eye for proportions and clean, minimalist lines as well as inspiring generations of carvers no matter the style or school. He initially developed his skills under the tutelage of iconic carvers like Poul Rasmussen and Sixten Ivarsson, eventually going on to start his own workshop with his father Emil in 1970. Jess has proven over the course of his storied career that he's a master of the Danish classic school, imparting his vast well of knowledge into every single piece he creates.
While we've seen many Billiards, Brandies, and Tomatoes from the Danish master, the Bulldog is a shape we don't frequently see from Chonowitsch. In fact, this is only the third we've ever received, but perfectly demonstrates Jess' precise line work and superb shaping. The canted bowl urges forward from out of the diamond shank and maintains the Bulldog's signature beadlines. Though the Bulldog is typically thought of as a muscular, rigid design, Jess has smoothed everything out considerably with the elongated transition helping to soften the profile. It's finished in a light-depth sandblast with the smooth rim providing some tastefully reserved contrast. This is one lovely piece, to be sure, and is perfect for any collector of high-quality, handcrafted Danish artisan pipes.- Jeffery Sitts
