Danish Estates: Jess Chonowitsch Smooth Pot with Mammoth Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-001-17759
Though no pipe maker (or human being, really) can lay claim to absolute, unfettered perfection, Jess Chonowitsch often comes awfully close. It's practically impossible to overstate Jess's significance to modern artisanal pipe making. This Pot shape, for example, could (and likely does) act as an archetype for the form across pipedom, exhibiting his characteristically affable, comforting take on Danish shaping.
With its squat, fairly substantial bowl packed with chamber complementing an arrow-straight shank, this Pot makes use of just the right Danish lift at the heel, leading effortlessly into the tightly shaped transition. It's finished in a warm, albeit fairly dark walnut stain, complemented by a creamy accent of mammoth and sleek saddle bit, offering just the right bit of implied negative space to visually balance the composition in profile.
