Danish Estates: Anne Julie Smooth Acorn with Bamboo (Stem Spliced)

Product Number: 004-001-18598

Anne Julie is a true legend in the history of Danish pipe making, and her influence and importance in the history of the craft cannot be understated. She was first introduced to the world of pipes through her marriage to renowned maker Poul Rasmussen, though it wasn't until his untimely death at a young age that she decided to try her hand at carving pipes with initial help from Hans "Former" Nielsen. She is also recognized for noticing a young Tom Eltang's promising skill back in 1974, and for offering him an apprenticeship. In terms of her own style, she creates highly unique and easily identifiable designs which has earned her a dedicated following over the years. And to see one of her pieces offered as an estate is extraordinary and a rare opportunity to own one of her highly sought-after works.

This particular Acorn offering is one of the most classically Danish pieces we've seen from Julie, highly reminiscent of Sixten Ivarsson's signature Peewit design in its execution and presentation. The bowl subtly tapers from its high-set waistline to the softened heel spur below and is finished in a matte, walnut stain that accentuates the inherent organicism of this piece. Three knuckles of pale bamboo extend the shank with the base of the saddle stem continuing the rhythmic spacing of the knuckles and features a steel tenon for reinforcement. The stem, while original, was at some point spliced with a new piece of vulcanite by a repairman and the chamber was re-coated. That said, this remains a truly special piece from the legendary artisan that deftly demonstrates her versatility and decades of experience.
