Danish Estates: Suhr Smooth Cutty (Unsmoked) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-001-17673
Suhr pipes are handmade by Johannes Rasmussen in Denmark. The Suhr name dates back to 1940s Denmark, specifically to a pipe repair shop of the same name that later became a manufacturer, employing the likes of Sixten Ivarsson and Poul Rasmussen. Johannes now carries on the Suhr name with his artisan pipes, having trained under Tom Eltang during the onset of career — coming full circle, as his grandmother, Anne Julie, was instrumental in the early stages of Tom's career.
Forward of profile with a good bit of visual weight lent to the bowl, this Suhr Cutty is an excellent take on the timeless archetype and calls to mind Eltang's interpretations. It displays a great bit of bulbous curve at the bowl's aft, further accentuating the shape's gestural disposition. The ever-so-slight downward curve of the shank and stem offer a gentle complement, bolstering that aforementioned sense of gesture just a slight bit. It wears a striking contrast stain that highlights cross grain on both flanks, the sophisticated, classic finish perfectly complementing Johannes' dynamic shaping. It's presented here in unsmoked condition.
