Danish Estates: Former Sandblasted Acorn
Product Number: 004-001-18650
We've seen tall Acorn renditions like this one from Hans "Former" Nielsen; however, most of them opt for a more subtle heel, whereas this one continues the bowl's taper down to a spur set past the transition. Such shaping lends the bowl added poise, perching it on the end of the sinuous shank-and-stem combination for an even more organic disposition. The sandblast, then, is extra-craggy compared to the often light-depth approaches of other Danish pipes — deep grooves canvasing the bowl in sweeping array. The stem, however, features my favorite aspect of this Former piece: The Danish artisan has shaped it in such a way so as to emulate the look of a mount, the base flaring outward, as if it were part of the shank, while the rest of the mouthpiece steps down to a more slender stretch. All of this, though, is the same section of vulcanite, expertly shaped by Nielsen and incorporated beautifully into the pipe's overall composition.-Truett Smith
