Danish Estates: Jess Chonowitsch Smooth Horn
Product Number: 004-001-17858
Every block of briar is as different as DNA; more so, when we consider that there are no identical twins among briar burls, at least not in terms of grain. Briar grows under conditions that inspire grain to take weird paths with sudden deviations caused by sand or pebbles or flaws of one kind or another, and to see the kind of grain possessed by this Horn from Jess Chonowitsch is extraordinary. Still, Jess does seem to find wonderful grain for his pipes, because he's talented at choosing shapes that will best highlight the natural beauty of any individual block of briar.
Jess' minimalist style is well displayed here, as is his mastery of line and proportion. The Horn shape is particularly svelte, its transition a gradual tapering in a sinuous sweep from rim to lip button. The heel is lifting, bringing a more upright impression to the bowl, which is topped with a domed, mushroom-like rim filled with tight birdseye. The shank is oval and longer in the vertical plane, lending more muscularity to its silhouette when viewed from above. Curve is everything in some shapes, including the Horn, and here the expansion of the bowl is wonderfully defined by the soft arcing through the transition and onto the flanks. The shank rises just slightly to meet the stem, which offers an inverse echoing curvature in delicate balance both physically and compositionaly.- Chuck Stanion
