Danish Estates: Jess Chonowitsch Smooth Bent Dublin (Replacement Stem)
Product Number: 004-001-17865
How Jess Chonowitsch achieves what he does is beyond the understanding of most of us, and this Dublin is a fine example of what he brings to the world of pipe making. How does one approach the Dublin shape, which is pretty structural, and imbue it with lithe curvature throughout? Jess answers that question with the soft curvature of this piece, serpentine in profile, with a lifting heel and domed rim. Even the cylindrical aspect of the shank-and-stem combination is softened with its gentle, downward turn.
The grain is, well, it's good. Very, very good, and enhanced further by the contrast staining of the bowl, allowing the strands of grain to rise up the bowl in vertical striations to endlessly entertain the eye. It has an almost natural, gourd shape to its form, with the top of the transition spacious and welcoming to any thumb that may want to drape itself over the top of the shank. It should be noted that the stem is a replacement and hence the price has been adjusted accordingly.- Chuck Stanion
