Danish Estates: Tao Sandblasted Freehand with Silver (A)
Product Number: 004-001-18033
I didn't immediately recognize this piece as a Tao. Jens Nielsen doesn't often finish his pipes in a sandblast, usually opting for smooth, natural finishes. That being said, though, the Danish carver certainly knows his way around a sandblast. Concise and consistent ring grain covers the surface, providing just the right amount of texture without interrupting the shape's profile. Shape-wise, this is a robust and muscular Freehand, its bowl flaring in Dublin-like fashion toward the broad, asymmetric rim. The shank end is accented by a bright silver band while the tan and ink tones of the half saddle, cumberland stem nicely complement the stummel's rich, crimson stain. Incredibly well crafted and gorgeously designed, this is yet another piece that shows off Tao's skill and craftsmanship.-Truett Smith
