Danish Estates: Bari Wiking Smooth Rhodesian (9mm)
Product Number: 004-001-18067
Kai Nielsen and Jørgen Nielsen, two Danish pipe makers with sterling reputations, each making pipes under their own names, are second-generation carvers who both worked at Bari in their youth. Their father was the famous Viggo Nielsen, who, among other accomplishments, founded Bari around 1950, and sold it to Van Eicken Tobaccos in Hamburg, Germany in 1978. So while Bari is now a German brand, this pipe was made when it was a Danish firm. Within Bari's portfolio, it's easy to find anything ranging from completely wild, Fancy style Freehands to straight, conservative shapes. This Rhodesian is clearly a case of the latter, though the proportions are certainly larger and stouter by general classic Danish standards. A metal band accents the shank end for added visual interest and features an engraved beadline to match the one wrapping around the bowl's waistline.- Chuck Stanion
