Danish Estates: Peter Hedegaard Smooth Bent Brandy (OP1)
Product Number: 004-001-18787
Peter Hedegaard learned pipe making under Hans "Former" Nielsen at the W.Ø. Larsen pipe factory, and alongside such carvers as Poul Ilsted, Teddy Knudsen, and Tonni Nielsen, so it isn't surprising that he became well known and admired before his death in 2007 at age 55. Whenever we see his pipes here, it sharpens the loss, and this piece emphasizes a particular creativity sorely missed by the pipe community. This Brandy is a remarkably bulbous design from the late Danish carver, with the bowl's plump, low-set waistline tapering up towards the slightly asymmetric rim. Cheeking around the transition reinforces the bowl's chubby disposition and further accentuates the mass lent to the heel. A mix of windswept vertical grain and birdseye comprises the stummel while the elegantly arching saddle stem promotes a comfortable, hands-free smoking posture.- Chuck Stanion
