Danish Estates: Teddy Knudsen Smooth Paneled Horn

Product Number: 004-001-18987

One of the legends of Danish pipe making, Teddy Knudsen's name is one sure to come up when discussing greats like Hans "Former" Nielsen, the Ivarssons, and Jess Chonowitsch — many of them even crossing paths during their tenures working for the W.Ø. Larsen workshop. Teddy got his start carving pipes in the Danish Air Force in 1970, making pipes for other soldiers in his spare time, and went on to handmake Select and Straight Grain pipes at W.Ø. Larsen. Now, with over 50 years of experience, his creations are in very high demand worldwide and we are lucky if we see a few each year.

This Horn puts his skill on full display, with tight striations of flame grain rising all around the bowl, brought to prominence by a paneled design in the shape of a gestural diamond when seen from above. A softly inflated rim, chamfering smoothly at the interior edge, boasts a dense field of birdseye, and a smooth finish and warm traditional stain accentuate the grain without causing distraction.

Teddy's pipes have been prized by collectors for decades for their superb finishing and excellent smoking properties. However, it is his skill as a sculptor and his artistic vision which he is most known for, his work exuding flowing, organic lines an inimitable evocation of nature. The linework of this piece speaks to that talent, with ridgelines sweeping around from the paneled sections in a sleek curve all the way through the transition and up the shank. A living legend, Knudsen still produces pipes but with a very low annual production rate, making his pieces even more sought after. For the discerning collector, this pipe is superlative, a masterpiece from one of the Danish greats, ready to become the crowning jewel of any collection.
