Danish Estates: Jess Chonowitsch Sandblasted Canadian
Product Number: 004-001-18992
When one smokes a Jess Chonowitsch pipe, they're experiencing some of the best shaping and engineering work in the pipe making world. The Danish artisan is widely regarded as one of the preeminent carvers — his ability to fashion proportions and lines, and his quality construction and stem work drawing collectors and placing his pipes among the upper echelons of pipe carving. Presented here is a classic Canadian, and as stated above, the shaping is beautifully consistent and balanced, not a line or curve is out of place. Such a traditional shape may appear simple and, therefore, easy to carve; however, the opposite holds true. Too much length or a sense of unevenness in the shank lines would completely dismantle the shape. Thankfully, neither of those are the case in this piece: The supple bowl is rounded at the heel, informing the taper toward the rim, and the shank's oval cross section forms subtle ridges along the flanks. A delicious sandblast adorns the stummel, with an auburn stain, accented by the smooth-polished, inflated rim for a reserved and typically Danish aesthetic.-Truett Smith
