Danish Estates: Peter Hedegaard Smooth Apple with Boxwood
Product Number: 004-001-19103
Peter Hedegaard learned pipe making under Hans "Former" Nielsen at the W.Ø. Larsen pipe factory, and alongside such carvers as Poul Ilsted, Teddy Knudsen, and Tonni Nielsen, so it isn't surprising that he became well known and admired before his death in 2007 at age 55. Whenever we see his pipes here, it sharpens the loss, and this piece emphasizes a particular creativity sorely missed by the pipe community. Plump-bowled, spherical shapes are well-represented in Peter's portfolio and this Apple is a particularly appetizing offering. The low-profile, oval shank further accentuates the visual prominence of the chubby bowl, creating cheeking around the transition that further supports the bowl's curvaceousness. The sleek stem continues the taper established by the shank and is accented by a pale band of boxwood, complementing the stummel's coloration.
