Danish Estates: Peter Stokkebye Smooth Elephant's Foot (K)
Product Number: 004-001-19502
Originally designed by legendary Swedish carver Bo Nordh, the Elephant's Foot is an immediately recognizable shape that's also notoriously difficult to create, as many elements have to line up perfectly. The initial struggle begins with selecting a briar block suitable for such a demanding shape, as the grain has to be practically flawless for the desired result to be achieved since grain orientation is paramount to execute the form well. This particular rendition was fashioned under the Peter Stokkebye name by Jørgen Larsen, a gifted pipe maker who was forced to retire due to a briar dust allergy. The large, palm-filling bowl itself remains conventional — marked by domed sections fore and aft separated by a crisp, tapering panel through the center. The flanking panels feature streaks of parallel cross grain, while birdseye is oriented along the bowl's curved fore and aft. Many Stokkebye pieces tend to be traditional shapes, making this Freehand offering quite a rare and collectible piece.- Jeffery Sitts
