Danish Estates: Lasse Skovgaard Smooth Bent Dublin
Product Number: 004-001-19697
A bold and striking bent Dublin from Lasse Skovgaard, this piece showcases the sinuous lines that often characterize the Danish carver's shaping style — the S-curve fluid and gestural, with the shank flaring dramatically into the transition. From there, the bowl rises tall and proud, sloping upward into a slightly domed rim, with the innermost portion steeply chamfered. The slightly stretched nature of the top of the transition and the bowl's height make this a pipe that sits naturally in hand, and the generous bend ensures a comfortable balance when clenched, in spite of the rather considerable size. My favorite aspect of the piece, though, is how Lasse has accented it with an asymmetrical ridgeline that also integrates the stem into the composition: The ridgeline begins at the right side of the shank, but is softly rounded and less noticeable. It, then, wraps up and over the stem base before curling down the shank's left flank, more crisply defined to inform the pointed nature of the heel.-Truett Smith
