Danish Estates: Former Handmade Smooth Billiard with Silver
Product Number: 004-001-20087
A revered master of the Danish tradition, Hans "Former" Nielsen has rightfully earned his status as a legendary artisan pipe maker. His historic career began when he was 15 years old, initially hired to repair pipes in Poul Rasmussen's shop in Copenhagen. Nielsen was able to gain firsthand experience in examining a pipe's internal engineering and learning what made a pipe properly function. Former would then work for W.Ø. Larsen, honing his skills while also overseeing the factory's quality control and fashioning pieces alongside fellow luminaries such as Teddy Knudsen and Tonni Nielsen. Former eventually built his own workshop and has been crafting exquisite high-grade pipes for decades.
This Billiard reaffirms Former's mastery of classic shapes, presenting a beautiful, thoroughly traditional interpretation. Subtle cheeking is employed at the transition, supporting the shaping of the bowl and adhering to traditional Danish design cues. Said bowl, then, is softly lifted of heel, perfectly echoing the arc of the transition, and the walls taper slightly in a forward cant to the rounded rim. The mouthpiece is slightly elongated, gradually tapering toward the comfortable lip button. The walnut stain ably showcases the gorgeous birdseye along the flanks, while a sterling silver mount adorns the shank end for further visual appreciation of this magnificent piece.- Jeffery Sitts
