Danish Estates: S. Bang Smooth Bent Apple (UN) (7)
Product Number: 004-001-20480
When observing S. Bang's work, it can be difficult to determine which of the workshop's expert artisans carved any given piece. Occasionally, though, you'll find a piece on which Per Hansen or Ulf Noltensmeier has stamped his individual stamp on a briar, as is the case here. Carved by Ulf Noltensmeier, this bent Apple is full of charm, featuring full rounded flanks and a rather muscular disposition overall, with prominent cheeking at the flanks of the lower bowl. It boasts some splendid flame grain and offers a compact form with plenty of poise in profile. Its nearly spherical bowl provides a comfortable feel in hand, while a single teardrop line running from the rim's fore, through heel, transition, and up the shank provides a touch of continuity and rigidity to the tight-knit form. An excellent piece from one of the most well-regarded workshops in Denmark, with Per and Ulf having retired in 2019.-Truett Smith
