Danish Estates: Jess Chonowitsch Sandblasted Dublin with Silver
Product Number: 004-001-20676
Jess Chonowitsch is a living legend in the world of pipe making, known for his meticulous eye for proportions and clean, minimalist lines as well as inspiring generations of carvers no matter the style or school. He initially developed his skills under the tutelage of iconic carvers like Poul Rasmussen and Sixten Ivarsson, eventually going on to start his own workshop with his father Emil in 1970. Jess has proven over the course of his storied career that he's a master of the Danish classic school, imparting his vast well of knowledge into every single piece he creates.
This straight Dublin is quintessential Jess, featuring a touch of extra firmness to the already muscular bowl, as well as the slightest hint of forward cant, affording a touch of implied motion and momentum to its streamlined form. The perfectly executed sandblast displays endless stacks of mesmerizing ring grain, its dark palette contrasted beautifully by a generous band of sterling silver, ultimately creating a beautiful dress pipe aesthetic in the process. A subtle, yet intriguing detail is how Jess opted to sandblast the rim on this piece, a departure from his usual approach of leaving the rim smooth and rounded. This composition deftly demonstrates why Chonowitsch's pipes are consistently sought after by collectors and is the kind of piece that will be cherished for many years.- Jeffery Sitts
