Danish Estates: Peter Stokkebye Smooth Brandy (C)

Product Number: 004-001-20769

Peter Stokkebye pipes were at one time made by Jørgen Larsen, a Danish carver with extraordinary skills who eventually became allergic to briar dust and had to give up pipe making. Larsen graded his pipes with letters, A being the highest possible grade, and this extraordinary slightly-bent Brandy earned his third-highest "C" stamp. The honorific is clearly deserved, as straight grain leaps up the sides of the bowl in elegant concert. Honestly, I see it more as B than a C; the grain is just stunning. Smooth Danish shaping cues are clearly present, with substantial cheeking at the transition, a strong taper to the bowl, and a svelte shank and stem arrangement. The shank is straight, with a cumberland stem tapering gradually and displaying just the slightest of bends to offer a comfortable smoking posture. An excellent pipe from a talented, retired artisan, this one is both beautiful to look at and highly collectible.
