Danish Estates: Tom Eltang Smooth Bent Dublin

Product Number: 004-001-28896

Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of artisan pipe making and collecting is seeing a carver reinterpret classic shapes and impart their own unique style on the final product. Each piece is lent a sense of creative individuality, showcasing the pipe maker's range and artistic vision. This especially holds true for Tom Eltang, a carver with over four decades of experience and heralded for his impeccable craftsmanship. He's crafted countless bent Dublins over the course of his career, yet each example is unique and unlike the last. They're all immediately recognizable as Eltang's work, often displaying his minimalist design aesthetic and utilizing subtle flourishing touches to ensure every single one is one-of-a-kind.

This bent Dublin is a prime example of Tom's signature style and distinctive approach to shape chart standards. Two subtle ridgelines emerge from the shank face's underside, traveling up the bowl's flanks before terminating at the broad, domed rim, each ridgeline coming to a slight point when viewed from above. They're nearly imperceptible unless light hits them in the right way or this piece is held in hand. The bowl remains the focal point of this composition, the curling, low-set transition effectively utilizing negative space to thrust the visual weight toward the bowl. The grain matches the shape perfectly as flame grain wraps around the bowl and perfectly follows the bowl's flare, leaving birdseye along the inflated rim. It's then finished in one of Eltang's exquisite contrast stains, left free of any adornments of accenting materials to let the grain and shaping take center stage. Truly impressive work from one of the all time Danish greats.
