Danish Estates: Former Smooth Canadian Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-001-21604
Hans "Former" Nielsen is a living legend — a Danish pipe maker who has honed his craft for over sixty years and earned worldwide renown for creating fine smoking instruments. He began making pipes in Poul Rasmussen's workshop at the age of 15, and quickly rose to prominence with an eye for detail and fine workmanship — later supervising the W.Ø. Larsen workshop and, then, creating his own workshop. This svelte Canadian secures his reputation once again, with a suitably prominent bowl boasting decided plumpness at its base and delightful cheeking at the transition.
The shank is ovoid, as the classic shape dictates, and both wider and lower in profile than I first expect, giving the pipe a sleek, bespoke aesthetic. The sense of fluidity is amplified by a glossy smooth finish, the surface combining with the graceful profile to create a sense of liquid momentum in hand. The grain, of course, is superb, with dense striations sweeping across the top of the shank and rim, and concentrations of birdseye adorning both flanks. An understated stem of tapered black vulcanite completes the ensemble with quiet elegance, offering a comfortable smoke while keeping my attention up front where it belongs.- Joel Balyeat
