A master carver with decades of experience, Jess Chonowitsch is renowned for his elegant shaping, precise engineering, and gorgeous finishes, all of which are on display with this bent Tomato design. The bowl possesses the form's considerable breadth and stoutness, but here it's lent a touch of verticality and forward-driving momentum by a dramatically lifted heel. Counterbalancing the bowl's forward advance, the shank-and-stem arrangement takes a rearward trajectory, curling out of the low-set transition and way from the bowl. This results in a multi-polar composition, one that's dynamically poised at either end. A gorgeous, earthy sandblast commends the briar and coaxes out rippling waves of growth rings across either flank of the bowl, save for the gently chamfered rim, which is left smooth and stained a lighter color for a touch of visual and tactile contrast.
