Kent Rasmussen's background in architecture and engineering have served him well as a pipe maker. That education, along with a creative imagination and amazing talent, enables the Danish artisan to come up with startlingly life-like, sculptural pieces such as this Jumping Whale. Highly organic and displaying a rushing sense of momentum, the mammal appears to be leaping up out of the water, the mortise on its back serving as its blow hole. Rife with a flowing, sweeping dynamism and incredibly curvaceous, its intricately shaped fluke allows it to sit upright. Dual-finished, its paneled, smooth undercurve is bracketed by softened ridgelines and dressed in an auburn contrast stain. The remainder of the piece wears a dark rustication for contrast and further textural allure. A truly fascinating piece. Presented unsmoked.
