Danish Estates: Jorgen Larsen Smooth Freehand (L) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 004-001-33453

Though now retired, Jorgen Larsen was a talented Danish artisan with decades of experience, crafting fine smoking instruments with great care and attention paid to all of their elements, both stylistic and functional. The technical director of both Stanwell and Kriswill at different times, his talent for carving is apparent in pieces such as this Freehand. Strikingly different from his other work, this piece looks far different than even the Freehands we've seen from him in the past, with a sculptural disposition that's thoroughly entrancing to gaze upon. The entirety of this piece looks as if it were tilted to the left, partially the result of a shaping feature I've yet to see at this point: The square, paneled shank starts the travel of a pair of ridges which wrap around the stummel, though, rather than both starting at around the same point, the left's starts at the topmost point, while the right starts at the bottom. This creates a highly asymmetrical piece that's rife with detail and features a supple, rounded bowl that does well to showcase the pipe's warm auburn stain.
