Danish Estates: Peter Heding Smooth Volcano (Gold) (Unsmoked) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-001-32954
Inspired by the artistic works of Anne-Julie, Peter Heding first laid hands on a block of briar in 2003, buying a few from Tom Eltang and carving his first pipes on his kitchen floor. Heding was then invited to Eltang's workshop, where he spent two years learning from the Danish master, Eltang teaching him the finer points of shaping and internal engineering, as well as inspiring his shaping style. Heding was so taken with the art of carving that, in 2006, the Ph.D. holding molecular biologist quit his job at a prestigious research institute to pursue a career as an artisan pipe maker, his talents in this field well reflected in this Volcano.
There's a great deal of gesture throughout the build of this piece, with a sweeping curvature possessing the shank and stem combination, while the fore of the stummel curves upward only slightly, completing an ultimately gracile S-curve. The aforementioned shank and stem take on an aerially-inclined, almost acrobatic presence that poise it for comfortable smoking and lends the piece an alluring dynamism as they rise higher than the bowl. The stylized half-saddle stem keeps the undercurve here consistent throughout, while offering visual intrigue at the aft side through the orientation of the base, said base additionally starting a wrapping ridgeline that plunges through the flanks and frames the outline of the entire stummel. Briar pushes out from this base and is rounded off quite nicely, the balanced build of the pipe allowing for stable sitting despite the shaping here. The bowl takes on a forward-urging stance and a gentle taper to the rim, with the rim itself dipped and favoring the aft to further enhance the dynamic presence of the piece. Dressed in a vibrant auburn contrast stain, this pipe showcases a dense array of wrapping flame grain that follows the shaping of the briar excellently, leading the eye to the bowl, while the underside displays a veritable ocean of rich birdseye.-John McElheny
