Danish Estates: S. Bang Smooth Blowfish (30) (PH) (1999) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 004-001-33123

S. Bang pipes are named for Svend Bang, the founder of the workshop in which two of the most talented individual artisans in the pipe world worked for nearly their entire careers. While Svend may not have carved too many pipes himself, he did bring together the dynamic duo of Per Hansen and Ulf Noltensmeier, and that itself is an achievement of its own. In the over 50 years that the two worked for the workshop, they not only honed their skills, but nearly perfected them, and when Bang himself retired in 1984, Hansen and Noltensmeier took over all operations for the small company, keeping the name to honor their proprietor. As of 2019 both artisans have retired from pipe making, leaving behind a legacy of superb shaping, excellent finishing, and exemplary smoking properties in their pieces, each one the result of painstaking work that prioritizes quality over all else.

This Blowfish was made by Per Hansen, and, like many of this shape that we've seen from the legendary workshop, this is quite the unique interpretation of the modern classic profile. Rather than shaping the bowl to include two distinct, asymmetric panels, this pipe has been carved in a form that more so resembles the Fish, with an Egg-like bowl that showcases a dynamic forward urge. This urge comes to a lifted point at the fore, providing a distinct locus of intrigue, though the bowl itself is more than worthy of study. Rather than utilizing the aforementioned panels, what Hansen has done here is leave the right flank rounded, complete with supple curves and a low-set waistline that informs an arcing taper to its tall rim. On the left, however, we see a wrapping ridgeline that plunges through the left fore from the rim, curling rearward and lifting at the transitional area before gently curving into the shank. This stylistically mirrors the design of the Blowfishes we're used to seeing, but maintains ample curvature, all while keeping the left side slightly flatter and wonderfully asymmetrical. The shank itself maintains that ridge throughout much of its upward-flicking travel, wrapping up and around the right side to frame the face and outline the left flank of the underside. A deeply bent stem is paired to this shank via a brass-reinforced push-mount and is poised for easy jaw-hanging despite the appreciable weight of this piece. Dressed in a warm, deep mahogany stain, the stummel of this piece showcases some truly incredible birdseye at the flanks, especially throughout the left, with cross grain striating the top and underside for a look that's worthy of display and appreciation.
