Danish Estates: Peter Heding Smooth Fish with Horn Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-001-33173
Inspired by the artistic works of Anne-Julie, Peter Heding first laid hands on a block of briar in 2003, buying a few from Tom Eltang and carving his first pipes on his kitchen floor. Heding was then invited to Eltang's workshop, where he spent two years learning from the Danish master, Eltang teaching him the finer points of shaping and internal engineering, as well as inspiring his shaping style. Heding was so taken with the art of carving that, in 2006, the Ph.D. holding molecular biologist quit his job at a prestigious research institute to pursue a career as an artisan pipe maker, his talents in this field well reflected in this Fish.
Overall, this piece reminds me of the Egg, with a curvaceous bowl that rounds out significantly at the flanks, its low-set waistline flaring out to provide ample contours that fills out the hand beautifully. This bowl sits atop a sweeping, lifted heel and showcases a slight taper to the rim that maintains the soft curves of the its outline very well. The stem lifts slightly as it pushes out from the wide transition, taking on its own subtle taper as it works to meet a ring of horn at the junction, this disparate material matching the black vulcanite of the saddle stem that marries the stummel here. This stem is sleek and stylized at the base with a bit of extra firmness, and its demure downturn at the bit lends a slight bit of poise to the composition which maintains the active look of the pipe. Dressed in a warm auburn-mahogany stain, this piece reveals some stunning grain, with bountiful birdseye at the flanks, though the left side is especially rich with the swirling grain.-John McElheny
