Danish Estates: Tonni Nielsen Sandblasted Billiard (2) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 004-001-32233

Tonni Nielsen has been carving pipes since 16, and has been taught by some of the greatest Danish masters ever to take up the craft, such as Former and Teddy Knudsen, this experience lending him a keen eye for detail that's reflected in this straight Billiard. This pipe is on the more reserved side compared to much of Nielsen's other work, and the Billiard shape as a whole is quite the rare one within his portfolio. A classic Danish interpretation of the profile, this pipe presents with a tall bowl whose low-set waistline marks the start of a gradual, arcing taper to the rim, its curves offering plenty of comfort in hand. The transition is wide and open, leaving ample room to drape a digit, and leads the eye to the shank which, in profile, looks round, but is actually an oval shaped length of briar oriented thin-side up. This is a shaping detail that's seldom seen in pipe making, with the vast majority of oval-shanked pipes orienting theirs in a flatter, more low-profile manner that emphasizes the bowl. When used like this, the added muscularity of the shank's profile works instead to balance the bowl, drawing some of its visual weight away and allowing for a more full appreciation of this pipe's craftsmanship. Dressed in an inky black sandblast and fitted to a black vulcanite saddle stem, this pipe's aesthetic is reserved and dark, though rich with detail.
