Danish Estates: Anne Julie Carved Zulu (Unsmoked) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-001-32217
Anne Julie is a venerated legend in the world of Danish pipe making, having come to the craft through her marriage to Poul Rasmussen. After Rasmussen's unfortunate passing at a young age, Anne decided to take up the craft for herself with initial help from Hans "Former" Nielsen. Like many Danish carvers, Julie crafts sleek, minimalist pieces on the same level as her more organic designs. This Zulu beautifully marries the two aspects of Julie's style, presenting a trim lightweight design with a good deal of organic character.
Perched at the end of a slender shank-and-stem arrangement, the bowl here rises high at the fore of the composition and takes on a subtle taper from its heel to its rim. The shank and stem provide balance to the bowl and keep the overall form lightweight in hand and streamlined in profile. The stummel's carved finish provides plenty of subtle texture for the fingers to explore, and it lends the bowl in particular a unique floral appearance, the rim looking as if its about to bloom for the first time. A dark, bruyere-violet stain and jet-black vulcanite mouthpiece lend the form a cohesive color palette that simply dazzles with its understated elegance.--Davin Hylton
