Danish Estates: Kurt Balleby Smooth Blowfish (00) Tobacco Pipe

Product Number: 004-001-33283

A man dedicated to the craft of pipe making, Kurt Balleby is one of Denmark's most well-respected artisans, and for good reason. Balleby spent six years apprenticing under Kai Nelson, learning everything he could about the craft, from designing and shaping to engineering and finishing. Once confident in his skills, Balleby opened his own workshop and started his career as an artisan pipe maker. He tends to focus on quality over quantity, and as such, he produces only a 100 or so pipes a year, making this Blowfish a real find.

The Blowfish is a notoriously difficult shape to fashion, but Balleby, meticulous when it comes to detail, was obviously more than up for the task. Though the the form's bifurcating ridgelines are present, the bowl retains a certain symmetry that's uncommon for the shape, with each of its flanks more or less identical to one another. The shape's asymmetry is more obvious when viewed from its fore or aft side, where the aforementioned ridgelines are more noticeable, traveling from the bowl, across the top of the shank, and into the shoulders of the saddle stem. The stummel presents a wonderful showing of grain, with birdseye adorning the bowl's flanks and cross grain wrapping the rim and heel, all underneath a glossy auburn stain.
