Danish Estates: Tom Eltang Sandblasted Rhodesian Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-001-33408
Tom Eltang's many talents speak to a man of great experience, one who has worked with some of the foremost names in Danish pipe making. At 16 Eltang apprenticed under Anne Julie before repairing pipes for Pipe-Dan and then touring Europe for Stanwell, demonstrating pipe making at events in tobacco shops. During this time, Eltang's eye for shaping, sense of pipe function, and his own personal style evolved, and when he finally decided to make pipes on his own, he attained a reputation for crafting fine smoking instruments such as this Rhodesian.
A rather interesting style of Rhodesian for Tom, this pipe eschews some of the slenderizing shaping that he's put into his more contemporary examples, especially through the shank and stem, though he makes up for this with their ovoid shaping. This alteration compresses the combination, making for a more slender look in profile, though maintaining a sense of muscularity when viewed aerially. Furthermore, the ovoid stretch of shank and stem make for an extremely gestural, lithe compliment to the sweeping heel of the bowl, affording this piece a continuous undercurve that does well to underscore the contours of the pipe as a whole. Despite all of this added emphasis to the curves, the actual bend of the shank and stem is quite demure, speaking to Eltang's skill in creating fluid works of functional art. The bowl here rises to an appreciable height, flaring to a high-set ridge that marks a domed taper to the chamfered rim, its own rounded edged making for a comfortable feel in hand that's lent added texture by the crisp, inky sandblast of the stummel.-John McElheny
