Danish Estates: Celius Fantasy Smooth Freehand (6) (Unsmoked) Tobacco Pipe
Product Number: 004-001-33373
A sizeable Freehand piece from Celius, this pipe certainly falls into the Danish Fancy category, with several striking elements about its construction that make it sure to stand out in a collection. The stem here is a sleek, stylized, demurely bent saddle that pushes into a broadly flaring shank face which has been wrapped by a firm ridge. The shank itself is actually quite slim, looking pinched at the transition and staying rather thin before rapidly expanding into its face. Said transition is more than wide enough to drape a digit, and leads the eye to the bowl: a towering monolith of briar that dominates the entirety of the composition. At more than two and a half inches tall, the imposing presence of the bowl isn't surprising, its massiveness sitting atop a pronounced heel as it flares to a vast rim crowned by dense plateau. A deep, broad chamber ensures lengthy smoking sessions, while the warm auburn stain covering the briar reveals wonderful grain throughout the surfaces of the bowl, a pair of panels on the right fore introducing some extra textural diversity.-John McElheny
